R 200216. 3 3/8” HARDY ST. GEORGE MULTIPLIER RHW. Circa 1934-1939. Agate LG. 3-screw latch; 2:1 Multiplier with spiral-cut gears; 2 3/8 in. ribbed brass foot; 9.2 oz. Marked on face plate: “Made by/ Hardy Bros. Ltd./ Alnwick, England” / “The “St. George” Reel.” Tapered Ebonite handle in the style of the Hardy Barton. Marked with reel maker’s initials: “J.S.” [= Jimmy Smith]. Spool and frame also marked with: “12.” Leaded gunmetal finish. 9 oz. Cap. DT-6 + 50 yd. Made with the lower gear housing introduced in 1934. In padded leather zip case. [Cat. 2020.] R 200216 an - The St. George Multiplier was produced from 1927 to 1939. It allowed a rapid retrieve of the line, especially useful when a fish was running towards the angler. The first models had a gear housing placed up next to the reel seat, but this version with the gear housing placed at the lower end was introduced in 1934. A larger salmon size of 3 3/4” was introduced in 1930. According to the Hardy Production Book, about 490 Multipliers were made, with the 3 3/8” size accounting for about 349 units. Since this low gear model was introduced in 1934, it was one of 109 made between 1934 and 1939. Jess Miller’s THE DUNKELD COLLECTION [1987] shows 2 versions of the St. George Multiplier as F307 & F308. John Drewett’s HARDY BROTHERS [1998] shows the same 2 versions on p.197. However, this reel is decidedly different from the 2 examples cited. This reel has the gear housing placed to the rear, but it does not drop below the main frame, as in the examples from the Miller & Drewett books. The reel maker’s initials “J.S.” stood for Jimmy Smith, who made fly reels from 1908 to 1960. This reel has a perfect smoky grey agate line guard. The original gunmetal finish is about 90%, which is very unusual for a 1930’s reel. Excellent mechanical condition. A fine Hardy collectible. Very Good/Near Fine. $1825
