R 200177. 2 5/8” H.L. LEONARD / [PHILBROOK & PAINE] Marbleized Fly Reel. Raised Pillar design. Circa 1877. 4 3/4 oz. One of the most desirable early American fly reels, this crank handle reel with a black hard rubber knob has a width of 1 in. The striking orange & black marbled front and rear plates are rimmed with a German silver raised pillar frame; foot is full length and unmarked; click is very strong and constant; screw heads show no use; The very clear stamp on the head plate reads: “H.L. Leonard / Maker.” The “r” in “Maker” looks like a “t”, so is probably a mistake. Small surface scratch on head plate between 7 & 8 o’clock, hardly noticeable with the marbleized finish. The tail plate is personalized with the scripted name “R.J. Holt Jr.” The spool has an ancient silk line on it. Everything on the reel is as found, with no cleaning or polishing. In leather zip case. [Cat. 2020] R 200177 IXabm. - The patent for the raised pillar design was issued to Francis J. Philbrook on June 12, 1877. Philbrook assigned the rights to the patent to Hiram L. Leonard; the manufacturing remained with Philbrook and his partner Edward Payne (all known stampings have Payne’s name spelled “Paine”) in Bangor Maine. The stamp with “H.L. Leonard Maker” is very rare; most were stamped with “Phillbrook & Paine.” It has been 12 years since Lang’s Auction House has offered a reel with the Leonard stamp. This reel, in uncleaned condition, can be left as found, or cleaned up as the owner desires. One of the more elusive sizes in the Phillbrook & Paine reels, and a fine addition to any collection of early fly reels. Near Fine uncleaned. $16000.
