FB 200165. 8’0” E.C. POWELL 2/2.HB. 3 1/2 oz. #5 line. “B-9” action. 5/64” tip; 13/64” mid; Wells grip; U/L bright alum. screw-lock over hard rubber into hooded cap ["E.C. Powell, Maker Marysville" stamped in oval ] Snake guide hook keeper; wraps early golden bronze silk on bronze snakes; agate stripper; Dark-toned varnished bamboo; bright N/S ferrules; butt wrap tipped with white & black silk trim indicating hollowbuilt construction; Marked with “Pat. No. 1932986” in ink on shaft underneath the hook keeper; one intermediate wrap between each guide; 7 intermediates between butt & first guide. 2-up node staggering. Book-matched tips. In original bag with Hanging Tag grommet [no Tag] & replacement alum. Tube. Circa late 1940’s-Early 1950’s. [Cat. 2020.] FB 200165 con-kr -This is a beautiful dark-toned early E.C. Powell-built rod with early golden bronze silk wraps. I tossed this B-9 with both a Cortland Sylk DT-4F line and a Cortland Sylk DT-5F line; I preferred the DT-5 line. It would make a wonderful small stream rod. All sections straight and full-length; one tip has a I inch invisible wrap between the tip top and 1st snake guide; Prior owner’s name neatly inked on shaft; Very Good varnish, with no nicks or scratches. The varnish on most Powell rods was never a strong point, and this rod is no exception. The tip top on one tip has been replaced with a later chrome tip top; the silk wrap is a different shade. The cork is moderately soiled. The cork is missing a small piece where the hooded cap is buried in the grip. Cap end of reel seat has “3 ½ oz”. neatly marked on it. I’ve owned around 200 Powell fly rods; this rod has some unusual attributes. The silk wraps are the same color as the 1930’s-1950’s Powells. Later, when Tony Maslan came aboard in 1954, the thread colors changed because the original thread was no longer available. The unusual arrangement of the Patent Date written underneath the hook keeper exists in several other EC Powells owned by Kevin Gerig, who has an extensive collection of EC Powell rods. He dates them to late 1940’s early 1950’s because of the thread color. This rod is a very rare example of a 8 ft. rod made by EC himself. EC Powell made very few rods under 8 1/2 ft. When I bought my first 8 ½ ft. EC Powell from him in 1958, he wanted me to get a real rod of 9 or 9 ½ ft. With the exception of the repair splice, Very Good. $2800 SOLD
