Circa 1980’s. [Cat. 2020.] FF 200065 jo- A fantastic fishing stick by one of the best stillwater anglers I know. His book STILLWATER FLY FISHING SECRETS is the best book I have ever read on the subject. Hal fishes with 12 to 20 ft. or longer leaders to take fish that most fishermen dream about. He is an expert on taking huge fish on his special rods, like the 24 lb. brown trout he caught and released from Lake Almanor in California some years ago. He uses his 3 weight rod to hook and land these fish in record time. He likes his supple rods which prevent the fish from breaking his leader. He has played so many big fish that he knows exactly how to tire them out. His rod is really unique. At first you think it is too soft to cast effectively. Then you string it up with the correct line and cast. The rod comes alive, and the line goes where you want it. It may not be every one’s cup of tea, but you can make it perform. Hal tells me he has made about 50 of these rods. They are made on a special mandrel with specific cuts on the fiberglass cloth to achieve the required action. This rod shows no signs of being fished.
