931269. Roscoe, E.S. RAMBLES WITH A FISHING-ROD. Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons. viii + 152 p. 1883 First Edition. 12mo. Dark green cloth with gilt title on spine & black-stamped title and fishing illustration on front cover. [Cat. 2020] 93269 rx. –Roscoe traveled to Europe with a fishing rod, but fishing was not his only intent. He had to find his own fishing, for there was no Sheringham WHERE TO FISH [1926] or Ritz A FLY FISHER’S LIFE [1959], which was my Baedeker for my 1961-1962 9-month fishing trip to Europe. Roscoe had to find the landowner for the river or lake he wanted to fish. The landowner had usually leased the fishing to a commercial fisherman who used a net, spear, or other means to catch fish for the market. Sport fishing was an oddity. The most interesting chapters are “The Professional Fisherman of the Eastern Alps.” and “On Fishing Tours Abroad.” I knew that I would have to find out who had the fishing rights for a selected water, but sport fishermen, not commercial fishermen, were in control. How times have changed! Very clean, bright & unblemished book, rate as Very Fine except for very slight wear on top & bottom of spine. $60
