R 140063. 3” PHILBROOK & PAINE Marbleized Fly Reel. Circa 1877. 6.8 oz. Cap. DT-6 + backing. One of the more desirable early American fly reels, this counter-balanced handle reel has a width of 1 in. The striking orange & black marbled front and rear plates are rimmed with a German silver raised pillar frame; foot is full length and unmarked; click is very strong and constant; screw heads show very little use; The stamp on the head plate is extremely faint, with a few letters visible under magnification. The marbleized knob is darker than the plates [some later knobs were black]. The outer rims and the plates have some very slight wear. The patent for the raised pillar design was issued to Francis J. Philbrook on June 12, 1877. Philbrook assigned the rights to the patent to Hiram L. Leonard; the manufacturing remained with Philbrook and his partner Edward Payne (all known stampings have Payne’s name spelled “Paine”) in Bangor Maine. 14-0063 VIIafmv. - The same model reel sold for $17,920 in auction on April 2007. One of the more elusive sizes in the Phillbrook & Paine reels, and a fine addition to any collection of early fly reels. Near Fine with noted exceptions. $14,000 SOLD
