R 190174. 4” J.W. YOUNG LANDEX WIDE. RH. 1 ¼” wide spool. 10.5 oz. Cap. WF-12 + 300 yd. Rectangular Line Guard; Special Free Spool Reel with Dual Dimple black Knobs on a handle which do not revolve when fish takes line; spool can be thumbed with fingers on the knobs. Young & Sons Ltd. / Redditch England.” & stamped on frame: “Patent 588494 / Regd. Design No. / 843416 & 843417.” Special polychromatic enamel; aluminum parts pre-treated to resist corrosion. In suede drawstring bag. [Cat. 2019] R 190174 nz. –This was a very innovative reel which allowed a fisherman to thumb the free-spinning spool without the handle spinning. It was offered by ORVIS in their 1955 Catalog, and I bought one for steelhead fishing to replace my Pflueger Medalist. I was tired of having my fingers knocked by the spinning knob when a hot steelhead took off. I used it extensively during the glory years of 1956-1957 on the Russian River in California when over 110,000 steelhead were caught by fishermen. The only problem I had with the reel was failing to oil the dogs every night on the anti-reverse mechanism in the handle set-up. I was sharing Bill Schaad’s quarters on the Russian, and was deficient on maintenance when it was time to fish or sleep or eat. That Landex really screamed when a tidewater steelhead took off! This Landex looked like one of my non-serviced reels- corrosion was noticeable around the ventilation ports in the spool, & in the reel seat attachment to the frame. The spindle on which the spool revolved was nearly twice the diameter of the spindle on the Fin-Nor Wedding Cake No. 4, and would never cave in on outward pressure on the spool. This was one sturdy reel. The only downside was from the same dual handle set-up as the first model Seamaster- the shooting fly line could wrap around the handle when making a cast. But what a terrific sound department! The click check on the Young reels screamed like no other. Very serviceable, but cosmetics only Good. $125
