R 170233. 3 3/4” HARDY PERFECT SALMON Wide Spool. RH/LH. No Line Guard; Long Ribbed brass foot [3 1/4 in. ] - must be cut down for modern seats; Rare Aluminum Ball-Bearing Race with Aluminum Shaft instead of Brass; 20 Ball Bearings in race instead of normal 15 bearings; Spool Bushing is bright metal rather than brass. I have sold a number of aluminum ball bearing race Perfects in contracted drum size of 3 1/8” to 3 7/8”. I dated these reels from 1940 to 1950’s based on the Maker’s initials. No book or catalog on Hardy Perfect reels has made any mention of this special model; most collectors or dealers are totally unaware of this variation. I fish my Trout models with the aluminum race all the time- they have held up very well on numerous large New Zealand & South American trout. This is the first Salmon Perfect I have seen with this variation. This model weighs 11 oz. [even with the long brass foot] compared to the usual 13 oz. of regular Perfects. Fat Ebonite Knob; Straight-line Writing: "The Perfect / 3 3/4” / "Made by /Hardy Bros./ England"/ on face plate; Small raised silver nub on face plate; Dupl. Mk II Check with spares; N/S spool retaining screw. About 80% leaded finish on spool and frame; face plate is bright with no leading. In zip-suede pouch. [Cat. 2017.] 17-0233 go.-These aluminum-race reels have a different sound from the regular Perfects. This reel is fine mechanically. Excellent Spey reel. Very Good. $825
