FB 180243 9’6” DAME STODDARD & KENDALL “HIGH GRADE” 3/2. Circa 1883-1900. 6 7/8 oz. #6 line. 5/64” tip; 11/64” mid; 19/64” butt; Full N/S DL Slide Band Reel Seat; marked on cap:”High Grade / Dame Stoddard & Kendall / Makers / Boston, Mass.” Cigar rattan grip with single spiral of red thread up through the rattan; Nickeled grip check; swelled butt; wraps deep red silk on drop-ring guides with full intermediates over pale bamboo; bright N/S ferrules; in wood form case with canvas over bag. [Cat. 2018] FB 180243 con-pa. –This antique rod, made in 1883-1900, is in remarkable original condition; it has probably never been fished. All sections are full-length and straight. All fittings and wraps appear original. I don’t think this rod has ever been refinished. The rod itself, rod case, and over bag look like it just stepped off the showroom floor. The varnish glistens; every guide and wrap is in place. The only very minor deficiency is that the wooden form case is missing the center cloth tie, and one of the end cloth ties is missing part of the strand. This rod was probably made by B.F. Nichols of Boston, who supplied rods to Dame Stoddard & Kendall for the 1883-1900 time period. Nichols used high quality fittings, & both the ferrules and the reel seat do not show a soldered seam as found in some of his earlier rods. A similar rod is shown on pp. 80-81 of Jeff Hatton’s ROD CRAFTING [Portland: Amato. 2005]. This outstanding rod should be in a museum. [Note: I don’t think this rod has ever been refinished. I bought a stock of pre-1900 rods that had been stored in a San Francisco Sport Shop since the turn of the century. Many of these Lancewood and Calcutta rods by Chubb, Abbey & Imbrie, and Conroy, were like New, with only corrosion on some of the metal fittings. Varnish was usually excellent, since they were stored in a cool dark place.] Very Fine-As New. $650
