R 180254 2 1/2” HARDY BIRMINGHAM BRASS PLATEWIND [Circa 1880-1921] 6 1/4 oz. 3/4 in. spool width; With “Enclosed Oval Logo” Trademark; Fixed Check; Ebonite knob; 2 5/8 in. smooth Brass Foot; in Leather Reel Case marked “Lady Brassey/ 3” [Cat. 2018.] R-180254 con-pa. –This Hardy reel is an attractive memento of a bygone era. The reel is completely fishable with a WF-3/4 line. It has a foot compatible with most reel seats, & a nice light check. The screw heads on the back plate show some wear; foot full length & untrimmed; frame shows some wear; brass finish uniform. This Hardy Birmingham reel fit nicely in the Lady Brassey leather case, but may have had nothing to do with “Lady Brassey.” Lady Brassey was Annie Brassey [1839-1887] who wrote a number of best-selling books on her trips around the world, including “A Voyage in the Sunbeam” She married Thomas Brassey, MP., later Earl Brassey, and they travelled around the world in the Sunbeam, with an entourage of 43. She conducted ethnographic & natural history material in her numerous books, & became a fly fisher of some note. The leather case shows excellent patina on the leather, with maroon felt interior. Stitching is complete, but the strap is missing the buckle on the receiving end. Case with defects is Good. Reel is Very Good. $550
