R 180262. 4” PFLUEGER MEDALIST No. 1496 1/2. RH. 7 oz. Rectangular Guard; Cap. DT-10 + 100 yd. [Cat. 2018] R 180262 rx. –This 1949-era Medalist 1496 ½ was superseded by the 1498 in 1959. This reel has black nylon backing on it. The early Medalist fly reels could not stand up to playing heavy fish with stretchy nylon or monofilament backing. The pressure from the line caused the spool plates to bend, & jam against the frame. I found this out in 1950, when I started playing king salmon and steelhead with monofilament backing on my Medalist reels. I had the spools jam on the frame too many times. I joined the old timers who used linen or other low stretch lines for backing under a 100 ft. length of monofilament for my shooting head. This reel has edge wear; the box is Very Good, with the original price tag of $13.50 still attached. Very Good. $55
