FB 180116. 7’9” GARRISON 206. 2/2. C-7.9-6 [1933] 3 ½ oz. #4 line. 4.5/64” tip; 12/64” mid; D/L bright N/S slide band over cork into N/S cap; Early Garrison grip; no hook keeper; Marked in black ink: ”Garrison – 206 / C-7.9-6.” Marked: “206-M/ C-7.9-6” at base of each tips. Wraps translucent yellow silk over dark snakes, stripper, & tip tops on pumpkin -colored varnished bamboo; Grip check and ferrule winding of black silk; early Halstead-type bright N/S ferrules; in probable replacement bag & newer Leather rod tube from Thomas & Thomas. [Cat. 2018] FB 180116 con-eg. – Garrison started building bamboo rods in 1922 under the tutelage of his neighbor, Dr. George Parker Holden. He started building rods using his personal engineering ideas in 1930 or 1931. The Serial Number on this rod, C-7.9-6, the “C” indicates that the rod was built in 1933; the “7.9” \indicates a rod of 7’9”; and the “6” was the 6th rod built in 1933. The rod was originally acquired from Len Codella, who owned Thomas & Thomas at one time, and has dealt in bamboo fly rods for many decades. The rod had some issues from hard use, so the owner sent it to Ted Simroe, the former master builder at Leonard, for a complete restoration. Simroe faithfully followed the characteristics of the original rod, but the grip was a Cigar with a different taper at the head end compared to the ordinary Garrison taper. The wraps on the guides were a translucent yellow silk instead of translucent white; the grip check and ferrule wraps were black rather than the chocolate-brown of other Garrisons. I discussed the rod with Len Codella and Hoagy Carmichael. All sections dead straight and full length. The grip has a plastic wrap, and totally unfished since restoration. The rod is beautiful, and absolutely glistens. A new Garrison grip and the correct wraps could be done by a number of good rod restorers to bring this rod up to a full Garrison restoration. New Restored with noted exceptions. $6000
