Citris Heights: Prvt. Prnt. by Author. 332 p. 2000 2000 1st Edition Hardcover New New Book 4to - over 9¾ - 12 Signed by Author
4to illus. 1st Lmt. Ed. One of 500 Unnumbered Copies.-Bob Cave has been working on a definitive bibliography of Haig-Brown [H-B] for over 7 years. This superlative book starts with Bibliographic References, a Foreword "Remembering Haig-Brown" by Van Egan, a coherant description of the terminology used in the descriptions, followed by sections on Books and Pamphlets by H-B (main part of the book, comprising 282 of of the 332 pages); Contributions to Books by H-B; Books with Excerpts of H-B's Writings; Book Reviews by H-B; Books about H-B; Articles in Periodicals by H-B; Articles in Periodicals about H-B; Published Letters Written by H-B; Broadcast on the CBC by H-B; and the Haig-Brown Collection at University of British Columbia. It also contains Appendices; a very useful Chronology of Published Books by H-B, with printing dates for all the different editions, and number of copies sold; and a Title Index. Each entry in the Book and Pamphlet section recieves a full bibliographic description by Title and Edition; Printed Title; Copyright; Collation; Contents; Typography and Paper; Binding; Dust Jacket; Copies Examined, and sometimes Notes. I found the Notes to be among the most interesting parts of the entire work. Since I am a long-term admirer of Haig-Brown, and a second-hand book dealer since 1977, I was fascinated with the details provided about the publishing history and other facets of the various editions. The book is further enhanced by unpublished photographs of Haig-Brown, reproductions of color plates from THE SALMON portfolio, and a color frontis of part of Bob Cave's own extensive Haig-Brown collection. 13 Skues, G.E.M. (Seaforth and Soforth) MINOR TACTICS OF THE CHALK STREAM and Kindred Studies.
London: Adams and Charles Black. xii + 133 p. + [2 p.] Adverts. 1910 1st Ed. Hard Cover Fine. No Jacket 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾
Dedicated "To my friend the Dry-Fly Purist, and to enemies, if I have any." G.E.M. Skues had a wit and a clarity of thinking that is rare in the fly fishing world; important first book by the founder of modern nymph fishing. [Cat. 71. 15-0137jz] -Skues fought a long battle with F.H. Halford and the proponents of dry fly only on the chalk streams; he won the battle by careful reasoning in his writings and incredible finesse in his fishing, but he lost his battle when he was banned from fishing his favorite rivers. I met Frank Sawyer, the River Keeper, on the banks of the River Avon in 1961, and knew him up to his death in 1980. He had a lengthy rapport with G.E.M. Skues from 1945 to Skues' death in 1949. He didn't agree with all of Skues' observations, but he respected him greatly. I wish I could have been there for those meetings. I consider Skues and Sawyer the Giants of the Chalk Streams. This copy of MINOR TACTICS is one of the best copies I have ever had. It is exceptionally clean and bright, with no fading of the externals; a small neat piscatorial bookplate of Joseph Spear Beck [1 1/4" x 3/8"] is on the front corner of the pastedown. [$250] $225
