[Cat. 2017.] 17-0111 koz. . –This rod drives a nice narrow loop with a SYLK DT-4; it would be a delight to fish on most waters. The area at the stripping guide has some line marks; Varnish has some minor bag marks & a few nicks which have been polished. This rod casts a very nice line with a Sylk DT-4. [CAT. 72.] 16-0110 aerx. –I took this rod out with a DT4 Sylk- it drove a beautiful loop in the Eastern Dry Fly tradition. The rod reached its zenith with 25- 45 ft of line out. Some people would probably preferred a DT5 line for better close-in flex. The fine tips [.060”] on this rod made it a very pleasant fishing stick. Quadrates in 7 ½ ft. & 3-piece construction are very rare and seldom listed. This is marked as a #35, but should have been a #33, to follow the Quadrate sequence in the 3 piece series. A Model #33 was 7 1/2 ft; #34 -8 ft.; #35 - 8 1/2 ft.; #36 – 9 ft.; #37 – 9 1/2 ft . All rod sections are full-length and straight; all varnish and wraps are original. Some light bag marks are present which could be polished out. The grip has been cleaned with some very slight ridging. The original brown silk bag was in taters; a new bag is included. The 36 in. leather tube is Very Good, with all straps complete. Overall, a rare Quadrate and a fine fishing stick. Near Fine. $2300

Many Halstead rods noted in Dealer’s Catalogs do not have identifying stamps on reel seat or names on shaft. Halstead worked for Leonard & Jim Payne before forming his own company, and was a good friend of Pinky Gillum. This is the third Halstead rod I have offered. It is a superlative casting rod with a DT-6 line. All sections straight, but in the restoration, the Halstead ferrules were replaced with later commercial bright N/S ferrules. Most Halstead rods had oxidixed ferrules. The rod was shortened by ½ inch during the restoration, so the rod now measures 8 ft. 10 ½ in. All sections are the same length. Grip slightly soiled, but was cleaned up; varnish very bright. With shortened sections & replacement ferrules, Near Fine Restored. [$950] REDUCED $760

The gold fittings and guides on this rod gave it a very elegant appearance. Rod has been fished; cork is moderately soiled; the md-section has been shortened 1 ½ in. with the ferrule reset; Both tips and the mid have a downward set. Ferrules are tight, and the repair on the ferrule is very good. Varnish is very good. The label on the rod tube is worn. This rod was made on Heddon #20 quality. The rod is very fishable as is, but would rate as only “Good” because of the shortened mid-section. $195

He was sending lots of time at the Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club in San Francisco, asking questions and watching various rods being cast. He learned rod building from Jim Schaaf and Mario Wojnicki, who both made hollow-built rods following the techniques of E.C Powell. I displayed one of Jim Hidy’s early rods, a 8 ft. 3/2 #5 line at several tackle shows, and later took the rod to New Zealand where it took a number of outsized brown trout. Many years later, I obtained this 7’9” Hidy, another early rod. Jim Hidy has changed his nomenclature and tapers since his early rods, but all his rods exhibit exquisite rod work and finishing. They are outstanding! I cast this rod with both a Cortland Sylk DT4 & DT5, but preferred it with the DT5. I had absolute control over all conceivable fishing distances. Hidy rods are in very short supply in the secondary rod market. His wait time is measured in years. His new rod prices are $3750 for 3 pc. rods. Screw lock into hooded cap; Wells grip; Marked: Holbrook Special / Bill Lohrer’s Sport Shop/ 125.” Wraps antique gold silk on bronze snakes over medium flamed varnished bamboo; bright stripper & tip tops; N/S blued Super-Z ferrule. Cloth bag & Alum. Tube. [Cat. 2017] 06-0324 fo. - Dawn Holbrook was a founding member of the Washington Fly Fishing Club in Seattle [1939]. He was a local icon in bamboo rod making, and also taught classes in bamboo rod building. Many of his rods were made for steelhead fishing in the Northwest, and were made as 8wt. or 9wt. rods. He was an admirer of E.C. Powell, and his rods reflect that view. This rod has 2-up node spacing, and uses Resorcinol glue. The guide wraps are double wrapped at the base in the manner of R.L. Winston. Rod is straight and full length. One tip has a 1.5 in. repair wrap near the tip top; the other tip has the bottom snake guide redone with the same thread. The rod bag has Dawn Hobrook’s Business Card stapled to it: :”Dawn Holbrook / Utilities Contractor / 11725 Meridian N./ Seattle Washington 98133/ (206) ME-2 3868.” The rod is a real powerhouse, and can be fished with a WF-8 or ST-9 or ST-10 shooting head. Cork is very clean; varnish excellent with little sign of use or wear. An excellent example of Holbrook’s workmanship. Aside from the crude repair wraps, the rod is Near Fine. $900
