Meals took so long to prepare that we probably burned up most of the dead wood in the high country. As with McDermand, we felt lucky if we could go a week with less than 60 lb. on our backs. I remember friends castigating McDermand, who worked as a salesman at the Emporium Sports Dept. in San Francisco, because his books encouraged so many fishermen to visit the High Sierras. In those days, we could walk a week without seeing another party.

No Date of Publication, but about 1956. Facsimile Signature on title page. -Witter fished most of the great trout waters of the West at their peak, plus Atlantic salmon on the Restigouche, trout in New Zealand, Europe, and South America. He fished trout on the Rising River and Hat Creek CA in 1915-1920's. and joined a club on the Rising River in 1920 after it recovered from the Mt. Lassen eruption in 1915. He commented on all the small trout, mostly under one pound. The Mt. Lassen eruption had killed most of the trout in Hat Creek & the Rising River with its hot mud flow. The fish were much larger by the early 1930's- Witter caught several fish of 6 lbs., and others took fish over 8 lb. Witter fought a large fish which he lost, and which later washed up downstream and weighed over 15 lb. His favorite streams were the Henry's Fork of the Snake, Silver Creek, and Rising River. Some wear on edges, Near Fine no DJ. [$50] $45
