[Cat. 71.] 94-0126 s. –“The sportsman, once his wanderings are over, and gout or poverty chains him by the leg, must find what comfort he can in an arm-chair and an atlas.” Aflalo’s travels recount “…its drawbacks as well as its delights, its duststorms as well as its sunsets, its mosquitoes as well as its butterflies, its illusions as well as the joy of it.” With two chapters on fishing, one on places and maps, another on guides or gillies the world over. 830489. Aflalo, F. G. SUNSHINE AND SPORT IN FLORIDA AND THE WEST INDIES. 8vo. Illus. with Forty-seven illustrations. London: T. Werner Laurie. xv + 272 p. No Date [1907]. 1st. Ed. [Cat. 71.] 83-0489 p. –Tarpon fishing in 1906 at Boca Grande, Florida with Edward vom Hofe and other notables; Aflalo caught 17 tarpon in 11 days. He used a vom Hofe reel which he first thought was too expensive, but after using it, would gladly pay twice the price. He also thought that tarpon not taken to a taxidermist should be released alive, a very novel idea for the time. He was appalled at the fish wasted. One of his numerous photos is captioned: “Slayers and Slain” and shows two sports with 10 dead tarpon. His comments on his trip from England to New York by boat, then by train to Florida, and his return trip by way of Cuba and Jamaica are pithy and reminiscent of Rudyard Kipling. In orig. ornate green cloth with gilt American flag on spine, plus gilt decoration on cover; Sporting bookplate of Stephen Fairbanks on front paste-down. The uncommon British 1st Edition. Meals took so long to prepare that we probably burned up most of the dead wood in the high country. As with McDermand, we felt lucky if we could go a week with less than 60 lb. on our backs. I remember friends castigating McDermand, who worked as a salesman at the Emporium Sports Dept. in San Francisco, because his books encouraged so many fishermen to visit the High Sierras. In those days, we could walk a week without seeing another party.
